Is 2012 The End of The World?????

The list of self appointed doomsday experts keeps on growing as 2012 approaches. Some claim that the Mayans predicted the end of the world thousands of years ago, others wonder at the possibility of some asteroid or comet striking the Earth and annihilating everything and then there are those who cite religious books to make their point.

The first to predict 2012 as the end of the world were the Mayans.Thousands of years ago they managed to calculate the length of the lunar moon as 329.53020 days, only 34 seconds out. The Mayan calendar predicts that the earth will end on December 21, 2012.

In spite of the so called (pseudo) scientific evidence they claim to have, you will, if you think rationally, not find a single good reason to believe in what they have to say. Moreover, there is no scientific evidence to suggest that 2012 is going to be more different from 2011 or 2013, then 2009 was from 2008 or 2010. Still, there is no dearth of people both in developed and developing countries who believe that the times we are living in are special and that the world is going to end in 2012.

Everybody must have heard of the Mayan calendar prophesying the end of the world in 2012. There Mayans were not alone. There are a couple of dozen famous prophesies predicting the Armageddon, doomsday or whatever you want to call it, in 2012. Here is a list of some of those theories:

 

PROPHESIES WITH SOME CREDENTIALS (Little better than wild guesses)

1. Coronal Mass Injection or CME:

A massive burst of isotope plasma and magnetic fields in form of solar wind in 2012 will cause huge upheaval on the planet as it will render most of our electronic devices useless, perhaps permanently.

Forte:

a. CME is not a fictional phenomenon.
b. It has a history of causing the telegraph (an electronic system) systems to collapse across Europe and North America during the solar storm of 1859.
c. The electronic systems in use today are much more sensitive than the telegraphs of 19th century; thus more vulnerable.

2. Explosion at the Center of Milky Way:

Dr. Paul LaViolette, put forward his theory in 1983 and the theory shed some light on what would happen if the core of our galaxy were to explode. According to the theory a wave of deadly cosmic rays would follow a “gravity wave”, both wrecking havoc on Earth. They calculated that the cosmic ray wave would hit earth in 2012.

Forte:

The proponents of the theory claim that the Asian Tsunami of 2004 was caused by a gravity wave resulting from an explosion at the center of our galaxy.

3. Gamma Ray Burst or GRB:

A gamma ray burst from a source within a distance of one kilo parsec (19.17 quadrillion miles) from the Earth would deplete half the ozone layer and cause massive deaths in its wake. It could happen in 2012.

Forte:

a. There is a speculation that historical mass extinctions could have been caused by gamma ray bursts.
b. NASA has already confirmed half of the ozone layer could be gone if a gamma ray burst were to occur within a radius of one kilo parsec.

4. Unwelcome Visitors from Space:

Ancients were more advanced, according to the proponents of this theory, and could see one of dark (still not found) asteroids or comets or meteors headed straight towards the Earth and hitting it in 2012.

Forte:

There are still a number of not–yet–found asteroids or comets or meteors up there.

 

5. Pole Shift Hypothesis:

The Earth’s magnetic field is rapidly losing its strength and it has already declined more than 10 per cent in the last 150 years alone. This will lead to more solar radiation coming to the surface of the Earth and causing millions (even billions) of deaths.

In addition to that, the poles are replacing each other i.e. the north pole is becoming the south pole and vice versa. The pole flip-flop could occur overnight in near future causing cataclysmic changes to occur.

Forte:

a. It is a scientifically verified fact that the Earth’s magnetic field is fast losing strength.
b. Pole reversal usually takes place every 400,000 years but the last reversal happened 730,000 years ago – so the change is already delayed a lot.

6. Pole Shift (physical):

Nobody understands what the phenomenon is about but whatever it is, it is not a good news for our species, at least according to the authors of the book Cataclysm!: Compelling Evidence of a Cosmic Catastrophe in 9500BC. This theory was put forward by Charles Hap good.

Forte:

Famous 20th century physicist Albert Einstein backed the ideas of Hap good.

FANTASIES

7. Judgment Day

Virtually all religions talk of the day of Judgment in one form or another. And according to the interpretations of some religious scholars, the day of Judgment falls in 2012.

Forte:

You cannot put the words of God in question!

8. Cosmic Rays:

There could be a significant increase in the amount of cosmic rays coming to the Earth in 2012 and if it occurred, it would seriously jeopardize life on the planet.

Forte:

It is still not known where the most powerful cosmic rays come from.

9. Pandemic:

Believers say a flu pandemic in 2012 will cause a large portion of our species to die.

Forte:

Increased human contact has multiplied the risk of a flu pandemic to spread across the world at an unimaginable speed.

10. World War Three:

The increased proliferation of nuclear weapons will cause friction between the powers-on-the-rise and established players which would lead to a Third World War resulting in mutual annihilation of our species in 2012.

Forte:

a. India, Pakistan, Israel and North Korea and already illegally developed nuclear weapons.
b. Three big powers – the United States, Russia and China – still do not trust each other.

 

11. Destruction from a Super volcano:

An explosion in the Yellowstone volcano in 2012 would wipe out almost half of the United States and cover the whole planet in a cloud of volcanic ash blocking sun-light and killing virtually all the life on Earth.

Forte:

Neither the Yellowstone volcano is fictional nor it is calm.

12. An Alien Attack:

There are a lot of people believing that the aliens are going to attack the planet in near future ( 2012) and nobody (except for those who accept to live under extraterrestrials) would survive their attack.

Forte:

The mysterious appearance of crop circles and unexplained UFO sights.

IMAGINATION UNLOCKED

 13. Revolt of the Machines:

Computers and other automated machines will revolt in 2012 against the humans, killing or taking them slaves.

14. A Mistake by a Time Traveler:

A time traveler from future will come back to the year 2012 and will do something that would rupture the Space-Time fabric of our universe and cause devastation on Earth.

15. Mad Scientist:

Some crazy scientist will make a nano-machine which would replicate so fast that the Earth would soon be overwhelmed by those devices in 2012.

16. New Species:

Advances in GM technology will give rise to hitherto unknown killer species with unimaginable powers in 2012.

17. Collapse of the Solar System:

A planet will pass by our solar system in 2012 and its gravitational force will disrupt the set-up of things causing the sun to burst and planets to collide with one another.

18. Exploding Nuclear Reactors:

Some unknown computer virus or electromagnetic rays would cause the nuclear reactors around the world to malfunction, and then explode, simultaneously in 2012.
